A preview with the same numbers as the Reel. Hover or tab through the monthly bars for the values. Your canvas is built from your own sheet, so it will look a little different.

    Before you start

Sheets canvas is a paid Gemini feature. Check these first so you don't get stuck at step 2.

    • A Google AI Pro or Ultra plan on your personal Google account. Google AI Pro is the plan that used to be called Google One AI Premium. At work or school, it comes with Google Workspace Business or Enterprise (Standard and Plus) or the AI Pro for Education add-on.

    • Write your prompt in English. Sheets canvas only works in English for now. You can still use Rupiah and your own category names.

    • Use a computer. The Gemini side panel in Sheets is easiest on a laptop or desktop browser.

Plans and names change. Check the current Google AI plans at one.google.com, or ask your Workspace admin.

Open Google Sheets and start a new file

Go to sheets.new. It opens a blank spreadsheet straight away. Or open Google Sheets and click Blank spreadsheet.

    Small tip

Name the file right away, for example Family Finance Dashboard. It makes it easy to find later and to share with your partner.

    Open Gemini and use Canvas

Click the Gemini button (the ✦ spark) at the top right of your sheet. The Gemini panel opens on the right. Choose Help me create a spreadsheet, the option marked Canvas.

    Don't see it?

    • Check that you're signed in with the account that has the plan (your photo at the top right).
    • On a work or school account, your admin has to turn Gemini on.
    • Google renames these options from time to time. If yours look different, look for Canvas in the Gemini panel.

Give one clear prompt and let Gemini build it

This is the exact prompt from the Reel. Check that Canvas is switched on in the prompt box, paste it, and send.

    Why this one prompt works

It answers the five things Gemini needs to know. Use the same pattern for any dashboard.

    1. 1

      What to build

a family finance dashboard in Google Sheets

    2. 2

      How it should look

a clean modern design, canvas style

    3. 3

      Where the data goes in

an input table for income and expenses

    4. 4

      What you want to see

monthly dashboard with charts, budget tracking, savings, and category breakdown

    5. 5

      Who uses it

easy to use, because the whole family will touch it

Want more control? Use the full prompt

The short prompt is great for a first try. The full prompt tells Gemini your currency, your people, your categories and your savings target, so the first version is much closer to what your family needs. Fill these in and the prompts below update as you type. Anything left blank stays as a highlighted placeholder you can edit in Gemini.

Saved only in this browser. Nothing you type leaves this page.

    The step most people skip

Get your dashboard, then check it in 2 minutes

In seconds, Gemini builds the input sheet, the formulas, the charts and the canvas dashboard. The canvas stays in sync with the sheet underneath, so new transactions show up on the dashboard. Before you trust it with real money, test it.

    The 2-minute test

    • Add one test expense to the input table, for example 100 in Groceries. Total expenses should go up by exactly 100, and money left should go down by 100.
    • Check the math once: money left = total income − total expenses.
    • Change the month filter. The numbers and charts should change with it.
    • Delete the test row, and check everything goes back.

If something is off, don't start over. Tell Gemini what you saw, for example: Total expenses didn't change when I added a row in Transactions. Fix the formulas so they include new rows.

Make it yours with follow-up prompts

You don't need a perfect first prompt. Keep asking Gemini for changes in the same panel. These are the ones I'd use first. They use your details from the form above.

    Switch the currency

    Budget alerts

    A savings goal

Simpler data entry for the family

    Last: clear the sample data

    Questions people ask

    Is it free?

No. Sheets canvas needs a paid plan (see Before you start). Without one, you can paste the full prompt into the free Gemini app at gemini.google.com and ask for step-by-step instructions and formulas to build the same dashboard yourself.

Can I write the prompt in Bahasa Indonesia?

Not yet. Sheets canvas only works in English for now, so write the prompt in English. Your category names and the Rupiah currency are fine.

Does the dashboard update when I add new data?

Yes. The canvas stays in sync with the sheet underneath. That's exactly what the 2-minute test in step 4 checks.

Will my dashboard look exactly like the one in the Reel?

No, and that's fine. Gemini builds a fresh design each time. Use the follow-up prompts to change anything you don't like.

Can I use this for something other than family finance?

Yes. Keep the five parts of the prompt (what, look, input, output, who) and change the content: a small business sales tracker, a class attendance sheet, a content calendar.
