Chart playground
Same data. Better choices.
One dataset: revenue by region. Change the chart type and styling, and watch the clarity score react. Decluttering, live.
About this exercise
One revenue-by-region dataset and a handful of design choices. Every change moves the clarity score, so you see decluttering principles at work.
How it works
- Choose a chart type: bar, column, line or donut.
- Pick a colour strategy, sort the values, highlight the leader and declutter the labels.
- Reach a clarity score of 80 or more to complete the exercise.
Principles you practise
- A horizontal bar chart is a solid choice for comparing categories.
- Sorted descending — the ranking is instant.
- One calm accent. Colour stays available to mean something.
- Highlighting the top region gives the eye an instant answer to “who won?”.
- Decluttered — only the ink that carries meaning remains.
What to avoid
- A line implies a time order. Regions are categories — the line invents a trend that isn’t there.
- 7 slices is far too many for a donut. Angles this similar are impossible to compare.
- Every bar a different colour signals “these are different categories” — but they’re the same metric. Colour with no meaning is noise.
- Heavy value labels everywhere compete with the data. Strip what you don’t need.
