Install Power BI Desktop

Get the free desktop app and open it for the first time.

  1. Step 1: Open the Power BI Desktop page on Microsoft’s site (powerbi.microsoft.com → Products → Power BI Desktop), then click Download free.

    Tip: On Windows you can also install it from the Microsoft Store — it auto-updates.

  2. Step 2: Run the installer (PBIDesktopSetup), accept the terms, and finish the wizard.

  3. Step 3: Open Power BI Desktop. Close the start-up splash to reach the empty report canvas.

  4. Step 4: Sign in with a work or school account (optional now, required later to publish).

    Watch out: Personal Gmail/Outlook accounts can’t publish to the Power BI Service — you’ll need an organisational account.
