Order of operations: calculating BMI

Ayu, a midwife at a community health center (puskesmas) in South Tangerang, records the weight and height of people at a health screening. She wants to calculate each participant's Body Mass Index (BMI) directly in Excel.

Task

Fill D2:D6 with the BMI: weight (kg) divided by the square of the height in meters. The height in column C is in centimeters, so convert it to meters inside the formula. Use the ^ operator for the power.

Hint 2
Height in meters is C2/100. Wrap it in parentheses before squaring it, because C2/100^2 means C2 divided by 10,000.

Explanation

=B2/(C2/100)^2 converts the height to meters inside the parentheses, squares it, then divides the weight by the result. Without parentheses, =B2/C2/100^2 works out 100^2 first, so the result is far too small. An equivalent form: =B2*10000/C2^2. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally considered normal.
